Dr. Unger directs Unger Primary Care, a concierge medical practice in Rancho Cucamonga, CA the focus of which include intensive diabetes management as well as drug and alcohol addiction. He also serves as the director of metabolic studies at the Catalina Research Institute. The research center uniquely incorporates primary care with clinical research in areas related to diabetes, sexual dysfunction, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, pain, obesity, and mental illness. He is the only family physician in the world who has been selected to oversee a cardiovascular outcomes trial (LEADER) and is the National Investigator for the SUSTAIN (Efficacy and Safety of Semaglutide Once-weekly Versus Placebo in Drug-naïve Subjects With Type 2 Diabetes) clinical trial.
Dr. Unger is the only family physician to have ever served as an associate editor of Diabetes Care and been awarded a fellowship by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He also serves as an associate editor for The Journal of Family Practice and Internal Medicine Review.
Over the past 15 years, Dr. Unger has published 3 medical textbooks on diabetes including Diabetes Management in Primary Care (1st and 2nd Editions) as well as over 160 peer reviewed articles on topics related to migraine, mental illness, pain, spirituality and diabetes. He has also edited a textbook on managing migraine headaches. He has spoken internationally on intensive diabetes management and is a main stage lecturer at Pri-Med conferences as well as at the American Academy of Family Practice annual meetings. In 2009, the American Diabetes Association in Orange County, CA. honored Dr. Unger as their Father of the Year.
Dr. Unger has served as a team physician for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball club and the World Wrestling Federation. During WrestleMania VII he was thrown threw a brick wall by two female wrestlers. He has also been hit over the head with a chair by Hulk Hogan and appeared on 2 of his reality TV shows.
Dr. Unger is board certified in family medicine. In his spare time, Dr. Unger volunteers as an actor with his daughter at the local community theatre. (No he does NOT sing or dance).
